Shortly before I began painting this, a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was not an aggressive cancer, but the diagnosis was shocking nevertheless. I knew as I worked that my inspiration was a wild, untamed celebration of life in the face of unwelcome news. It wasn’t until the painting was finished that I realized that I was painting a dance of defiance against the emperor of maladies itself.

One of most supportive collectors snapped it up, not knowing the backstory and seeing only the freedom and joy of the dance. My friend and I both revel in that fact, and in our "secret" about the piece. Thankfully, after treatment, she is testing cancer free.
