I am fascinated by symbols, marks, & texts that are just outside our ability to read in the common sense of the word. I am also drawn to those fleeting moments when we escape our lot as thinking beings and access our nonverbal selves. I believe that our deepest truth lies in those moments. Art, especially abstract art, triggers these kind of moments for me, in both the creating and in the viewing. I become for an instant a human being, outside my normal mode of human doing.

Created in summer, 2022, in the midst of record breaking heat and monumental drought, as well as distressing news on many local and international fronts, Languid addresses my state of being. It is a self portrait of a chapter of my life.

The Weight of Years explores my shock at finding myself living my 70th year. How on earth did all these years pass? How do I face with grace the years ahead? How does one become old? Am I not, in my deepest, truest self, still the same as the young woman that set out on this journey? When will the weight of the years descend?

HerNFT is a limited, curated collection of NFTs created by female artists in celebration of International Women’s Day and breaking the bias against women in blockchain. The collection taps into feminine energy and showcases female perspectives with NFT art. The collection debuted on March 8, 2022 for International Women’s Day, in partnership with Stacks Foundation. HeyLayer will donate 100% of its portion of sales from the event to support Ukraine. This piece is entitled Memory Garden. The exploration of the concept of memory stems from watching my mother forget how to do ordinary daily tasks. Her memory can be crisp, sharp, connected, intact. It can be eroded, diffused, faded, damaged. And yet, despite it all, the beauty of my mother continues to shine through. The work attempts to reflect that. It is a digital collage of three experimental photographic images.

As seen on heylayer.com. I am an echo. Ancient Venus in formed clay. Mother to daughter. This series explores the matriarchal ties that bind from Paleolithic Venus figurines to modern woman, a chain of mitochondrial DNA that ultimately links us all. The images use overlays of historical artifacts against backgrounds of my crystalotype photography to create an echo of all womankind.

This piece is based on a photographic chemigram, an image created using a camera-less approach to recording marks on photographic paper. My work is centered in a sense of wonder and curiosity, and takes its cues from forces of nature - in this case, life at a cellular level. The cellular metaphor encourages me to think of hidden mysteries that can only be seen and appreciated by looking deeper, past the surface, into the depths of a thing.
