Just as color can seduce, so can a deep plunge into value - a celebration of light and shadow dating from my more conventional period.
Working in black and white acts as a foil to my competing love of color, and ‘stretches’ my creative eye. By eliminating color, I am reaching for something elemental - the essence of each place or situation, expressed in tonal values, texture, and pattern without the emotional element color introduces. There is an alchemy in black and white imagery in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, a mystery that fascinates.
