A luminous ivory and pale gold ground carries an alphabet of marks that hover between writing and pure form — large black hooked gestures, purple U-shapes along the upper edge, a heart-like loop at center right, small wedge forms as punctuation, and a network of fine sgraffito lines throughout, with fragments of red and ochre emerging from beneath. The marks feel both overheard and invented, as though transcribed from a language just beyond reach. In oil and cold wax. Part of the Soundings series by Texas abstract painter Wanda Oliver.
