A singular dark purple vertical form rises from the lower ground, braiding and splitting as it ascends before arching at the top — unmistakably a tree, yet rendered entirely in the language of abstraction. Around it, warm ochre, amber, and gold fill the right side while lavender, mauve, and scraped white inhabit the left, the surface excavated and worked throughout to reveal layers beneath layers. Dark maroon gathers at the edges like dusk. In oil and cold wax. Part of the Soundings series by Texas abstract painter Wanda Oliver.
